The Peddler Steakhouse American Restaurant

peddler steak house

Thankfully, Los Angeles has no shortage of fantastic steakhouses, with top-tier restaurants serving inventive and classic cocktails and always delicious sides in addition to all kinds of grilled red meat. If classic chophouses, modern beef palaces, or spots that serve dashes of Japanese flavors, here are 14 feast-worthy steakhouses in Los Angeles. For grilling action at LA’s Korean barbecue restaurants, click here. Our prime rib, grilled chicken and seafood specialties are always cooked to perfection.

A restaurant built upon tradition.

On the second floor of the towering Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown LA is chef Shin Thompson’s meat emporium serving high-end yakiniku and omakase for Japanese beef aficionados. Burbank’s 77-year-old Smoke House is a time capsule with red leather booths, white tablecloths, a carpet that’s likely decades old, neon signs, and so much casual charm. The slow-roasted prime rib is the house specialty and is served au jus for a reasonable $42. In fact, the Smoke House’s menu is one of the best deals in town, especially the tri-tip sandwich for $22. Head to the top floor of Eataly in Century City Terra and take a moment to observe the sprawling views with a whiff of smoky flavors emanating from the grill. Always take recommendations from Terra’s seasoned staff, but it’s best to start with burrata, grilled bread, and salads before moving on to grilled fish and meat skewers.

Each steak we serve is aged for a minimum of 28 days for ultimate flavor and tenderness, and cut at your table upon request. Our prime rib is the house specialty, but we strive for perfection in everything we serve, including steak, seafood, and chicken entrees all prepared over live charcoal. The Peddler Steak House is located in the heart of downtown Spartanburg at 149 West Main Street in historic Morgan Square.

Inside and out, it’s pure kitsch at Damon’s, where bartenders prepare potent mai tais with a proprietary recipe. Owner Gale Barefoot worked his way up from his days as a dishwasher at age 19 to overseeing the entire restaurant operation within a few short years. His wife Joyce answered phones, worked the floor on busy nights, and greeted customers for 44 years — until her death in 2013. Both of their daughters, and countless other family members, have worked at the Peddler over the years, and several of our long term staff members have become like family. There are some nights, especially during Spring and Fall, that are just perfect for outdoor dining.

Families have passed down the tradition from generation to generation, making our steakhouse a can’t-miss restaurant when they visit Gatlinburg. A little over 10 years ago, Chi Spacca became LA’s first meat-curing facility to be certified by the Department of Public Health. This Italian restaurant specializes in bistecca Fiorentina, a 50-ounce dry-aged prime porterhouse. For those intimidated by that massive size, there’s the crostata alla Fiorentina, a prime dry-aged, bone-in New York steak that registers only 36 ounces.

MENU

Spacca is an intimate space for those going all-out on the meats. Don’t forget to share the famous focaccia di recco to start, a cheesy flatbread perfected by chef Nancy Silverton. In Redondo Beach, this elegant steakhouse does beef exceedingly well with a wood-fried sear on the outside while maintaining a juicy, tender core.

Spartanburg’s Best Downtown Bar

Part butcher shop-part restaurant, Gwen is chef Curtis and brother Luke Stone’s Hollywood meat sanctuary, which earned a Michelin star in 2022 for its overall excellence. The upscale steakhouse has more of a fine-dining feel with dishes like Josper-grilled squid with Thai chile or lobster tortellini leading into dry-aged cuts that are butchered on the premises. The wines and cocktails are also exemplary, but the real differentiator at Gwen is the service.

Adobe Illustrator for iPad is a great tool for graphic designers on the go. It allows users to draw crisp lines, create smooth curves, and transform type using its world-class type tools. On the Horizon, we found self-serve laundry rooms on most decks that only cost $6 for a load. Carnival Vista has all the usual cruise ship attractions – casino, spa and fitness center, shops – but its top-deck attractions are next-level. Bonsai Sushi and Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse offer indoor and outdoor dining along the Ocean Plaza promenade. The steakhouse is the fanciest restaurant onboard for all your night-out needs. Carnival Vista has plenty of casual, no-fee dining spots, many clustered by the Lido Marketplace on the pool deck.

The Best Carnival Cruise Tips For While You're Onboard

We have provided you with a 100 Carnival cruise tips and tricks, but feel free to look for more. Some of these tips keep vacations from going sour such as remembering to carry required documentation, so, pay attention. Use any of the tips you have noted above to enjoy a smoother cruise.

Wait out the lines by engaging in other cruise events

Whether this is your first time cruising or not, there are plenty of places to see...and equally as many places to get lost. And no matter what stage of the planning process you're at, there's a lot to know in order for you to make the most of your time and money while onboard. With two people in a small space, bathroom smells can be an issue. Foul smells, small cabins, and no ventilation are a bad combo. Pack some air freshener with you on your next cruise.

Before you board, go online and order a pack of water from the Carnival FunShops. It costs about $10 for a dozen bottles, and it’s nice to have in the room. Passengers aren’t allowed to bring on bottles in their luggage (cans/cartons only), so you can’t bring on most water containers. Plus, having some water in the room is nice to keep from having to head to the dining room or buffet to get a drink.

Depending on which ship you are on, locate deck 5,6, 7 and 10 by walking straight and out of the side doors or doors marked emergency only at the end of long hallways. There are many fun activities onboard Carnival cruises. Try the ones which are least crowded during the first days of the cruise and move on to the more hyped ones, when the queues decline. As with all other things, spa treatments are discounted on port days and towards the end of the cruise. You can also use the sauna and Jacuzzis on some decks in the evenings for free. You’ll spend a lot of time here unless you’re like us and party all night long!

From the venues onboard to the entertainment to the food and more, it’s all bigger and better than what you find on older ships in the fleet. But the food that’s included with your cruise fare offers a lot of variety. Previously mentioned Cucina Del Capitano is available if you want Italian. But while the style matches with present-day design, it’s also very comfortable. There is also lots of fun artwork and features around the ship that add to the “fun” feeling.

First, compared to other Carnival ships there is so much more to see and do. In our eyes, Royal Caribbean has always pushed to have the most things to do on a ship. Celebration brings the two lines on more even footing. Sure there are the classic cruise activities like the pool deck, casino, and bars/lounges to enjoy.

Pools and sun decks

carnival cruise things to know

Ships have a putt-putt mini-golf course that adults and kids will find entertaining (the wind on a ship makes it challenging). As well, ping-pong is also a favorite with the cruise lines even holding tournaments so you can challenge your fellow passengers. Other games like foosball and more are also available. We’ll be the first to say that the payouts in a cruise casino aren’t that great.

Use the Carnival Hub App

Put important information on it such as allergies, existing conditions, the current medication you are on, personal information and contact information for emergency contact. If you know your port of call well, venture into it and buy souvenirs from local grocery stores where prices are not hiked. Also, wait for souvenir sale offs and discount deals at the ship’s gift shop. Since you share many public surfaces with these people carry a hand sanitizer to keep from getting sick. Be generous with the cruise staff and you will be treated like royalty.

But the best pool in our opinion is one that sits in the exclusive Havana area. Not everyone can access this area — it’s reserved for passengers staying in Havana rooms. When we watched the popular circus show, we showed up 20 minutes early and there wasn’t a seat to be found. Instead, we watched from the extreme left of the stage and just stood the entire time. (In fact, they actually put on the show twice a night for two nights to accommodate everyone.) And even the cabin bathroom felt like the smallest we’ve seen on a cruise ship. Decks at the top of the ship are the pool/outdoor decks.

Since there are usually plenty of people on the elevator, it’s common courtesy to wait and let anyone get off at your floor before you try to get on. If you want to head from the back of the ship to the front of the ship, you might have to go up or down a floor or two to make your way the length of many Carnival ships. Things like the dining room and theater cut through multiple floors and keep you from being able to get through. Stick with the main promenade deck if you want an easy way to go back and forth.

I am, of course, too cool to ever put a key card lanyard around my neck, which means I lose my card once or twice on every trip. Most cruising these days is casual, and you really only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage. Many ships have launderettes on cabin decks where you can run a load or two of laundry every few days.

There are also souvenir shops on the ship where you can find practically anything you want adorned with the ship’s picture or name. As for gratuities, those can be paid in advance through the hub app, while fine dining gratuities are paid onboard. One of the best things about a cruise is the choice of foods, both on and off the ship.

Our Fleet

norwegian line cruise ships

Measuring 143,535 gross tons and carrying 3,099 passengers at double occupancy, it's almost identical to Norwegian's last new ship, Norwegian Prima. Both ships are part of the line's new six-ship Prima Class series, which will be rolling out through 2028. Members earn points for every night they sail on one of the line's ships. They get an additional point for every night they stay in a concierge room, a suite (not including stays in minisuites, or stays in suites resulting from an upgrade) or a room in The Haven.

To ensure you end up on the right Norwegian Cruise Line ship for you, it pays to understand which Norwegian Cruise Line ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking. The smallest Norwegian Cruise Line ships are best for vacationers who like a less crowded, more intimate resort experience. Are you looking for the most megaresort-like, activity-packed Norwegian Cruise Line ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

Norwegian Cruise Ships By Size

If you're sure Norwegian is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Norwegian's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand. A passenger staying in suites and booking through Latitudes Rewards Insider Offers could get to the Platinum level with just four seven-night cruises. Lower tiers don't bring all that much in terms of truly valuable benefits. You'll get things like priority check-in and discounted spa treatments performed while ships are in port.

Norwegian Sun's top deck mostly comprises sunning areas, with a single pool and whirlpools, as is typical for ships built more than two decades ago. A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two. Only solos staying in the solo cabins (via keycards) can access the Studio Lounge, meaning that you and your new solo friends will have the place to yourselves.

The inaugural season in Northern Europe (August 17 through September 13, 2022) includes 10-day Baltic itineraries leaving from Amsterdam and Copenhagen. (April 22-October 15, 2023) NCL Alaska schedule lists 4 ships (Sun, Jewel, Joy, Encore) and 5- to 9-day itineraries out of Seattle WA, Vancouver BC, and Seward AK. After her first summer season in NYC, NCL Encore returned to Miami for 7-day Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Roatan Island, Harvest Caye, Costa Maya, Cozumel. Also sails day Panama Canal cruises with visits to Puerto Plata, Kralendijk, Willemstad, Oranjestad, Santa Marta, Cartagena, Colon, Puerto Limon. From homeport Miami, the ship operates roundtrips (Sunday departures) on 7-day Eastern Caribbean itineraries with call ports San Juan Puerto Rico, St Thomas USVI, and Tortola BVI.

While the Prima-class vessels aren’t aiming to be the biggest on the ocean today, they do offer a range of innovative special features that frequent cruisers will like. As you can see from their list below, the oldest one (NCL Sky) is just 14 years old. NCL ships are big (to really large), well-equipped, offering feature amenities and onboard activities, and sailing worldwide.

They are also popular with solo travelers, thanks to their unusually large complexes of cabins for one (something you'll find on the Breakaway and Epic classes of ships, too). Four of Norwegian's 19 ships — Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore — are among the 30 biggest ships in the world. As such, they're loaded with huge numbers of cabins, restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top amusements. Newer Norwegian Cruise Line ships are generally bigger than older Norwegian ships — sometimes much bigger. As a result, they have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than the line's older vessels. The newest Norwegian cruise ship is typically also the Norwegian ship with the most modern, up-to-date cabins and the most enticing mix of restaurants, bars and attractions.

Learn About Credit Cards

In addition, several Norwegian ships offer dinner theater venues with circus-type productions, and one vessel, Norwegian Getaway, features a magic-infused dinner theater show in a steampunk-inspired space called The Illusionarium. You might even find Starbucks stores on some ships (the one-year-old Norwegian Prima has two!) and there are Starbucks products on every Norwegian vessel. Also, some ships have private restaurants just for passengers staying in The Haven. The Garden Villas also have private outdoor sun decks and courtyards with hot tubs.

On their top decks, the ships have pools (one on Sun, two on Sky), whirlpools, a basketball court that doubles as a volleyball court, golf driving nets and a jogging track. An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single, seven-night trip. In addition, Norwegian Epic has the line's biggest solo cabin complex (with 128 rooms for one) and a giant The Haven private suite complex. Norwegian Epic is also home to the only tube-and-bowl waterslide at sea and has such rare-for-cruise-ships attractions as a rappelling wall and a three-lane bowling alley.

Unlike most bigger Norwegian ships, neither of the vessels has a private The Haven suite complex or solo cabins. If you sail on Pride of America, you'll find such one-of-a-kind eateries as the classic American car-themed Cadillac Diner. You'll also find some of Norwegian's signature offerings, including a Cagney's steak house and Italian eatery La Cucina. The ship's other onboard attractions include a showroom, lounges, bars and a top deck with extensive open-air pool and sun lounging areas. In general, as with the Breakaway Plus ships, these vessels are best for vacationers who like a megaresort-type experience, and they appeal heavily to families with children who love all their deck-top attractions. Each of the two ships in this series — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — holds about 4,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian Aqua is the newest Norwegian Cruise Line ship you can book now. While the ship isn't yet sailing, its initial voyages scheduled for April 2025 are already on sale, as are future sailings through April 2026. The three other Norwegian ships on order have yet to open for bookings.

The refined design of The Commodore Room, the wide variety of to-the-minute items at the indoor/outdoor Surfside Café, and the global offerings of Indulge Food Hall will satisfy every craving. Discover unparalleled luxury in The Haven, an exclusive enclave with our most premium and spacious accommodations. Enjoy the personal service of a 24-hour butler and world-class amenities, exclusively reserved for guests of The Haven.

One of two ships in the line's Sun class that date to the turn of the millennium, Norwegian Sky is far from the snazziest ship in the Norwegian fleet. At 77,104 tons and carrying 1,944 passengers, it's just half the size of Norwegian's biggest ships and has far fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. There is no giant water park on its top deck or a go-kart track to keep the kids busy all day, so it's not the best Norwegian Cruise Line ship for families. The line's nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upward of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (even more with every berth filled). At around 144,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all nine currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut).

Delivered in 2017, the ship has sailed around both Asia and North America. It’s worth noting that many of these ships have received substantial and even multiple refurbishments since their original builds. So, even if you took a cruise on Norwegian Spirit, for example, you’d still be able to take advantage of refurbishments that occurred as recently as 2020. Lastly, the oldest class for NCL is the Sun Class, which debuted in 1999 and includes Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun. Dine, dance, laugh, and relax with onboard activities, premier entertainment, and unforgettable shore excursions.
